A visit to Trisha's

yes - yes - yes - Trisha's is open - we visited Trisha's on Cambridge Terrace for a well deserved pie after our ride today.

It looks like I have a bit of sampling to do to actually get through the entire pie selection at Trisha's, but I feel I must do it for the sake of my fans.

look at all those lovely pies.

I tried the bacon and Egg Pie , which I found very nice (I think there were 3 yolks) , but a lot more Egg than bacon - I still think the pick of Trisha's pies are the steak ones - particularly pepper steak - and I know some of the guys agree with me too.

Now thats what we are talking about

The boys tucking into Trisha's Pies on the beach at Lyall bay.

As O.B. said lumps of steak the size of a small planet . gadget reckons that you can at least tell its beef when its that size - smaller bits (like in some other pies) could be any random roadkill creature.

Irvines Pies

Irvines - These pies are ok after a lot of beers and your walking/ staggering home past a petrol station or a dairy - but not that great if your thinking "Id really love a good pie" .

Hataitai Hot breadshop pies

Just a quick note here - some other pie officianado on the web suggest HHBS for pies (his review was back in 2006) Luckily for the boys, I tried one of these on my own , it was dry and left an aftertaste of fat in my mouth - had to drink water and eat chocolate to resolve that - anyway HHBS must have change owners or something - Gadget doesnt recommend popping in there for a pie - maybe try the Realm at Hataitai instead for a pint.

Mrs Macs Pies.

We cant have it said that I have only tried Trisha's Pies, so in an effort to bring a balanced review of pies I have forced myself (didnt actually take much) to eat other brands of pies as well.
I have found that Mrs Macs pies are a quite acceptable pie to have while on the Run as they are conveniently located for sale in almost every Dairy and petrol station throughout New Zealand. Except of course when travelling to Kilbirnie, The basin reserve or along Featherston street at which times Trisha's is probably the only choice.
Driving to Palmerston North on a thursday night however is a different story - every Dairy and Petrol station had mrs macs pie signs out the front and every one off them had nada in the pie warmer. I was forced to eventually eat a filled roll which contained green stuff.

Mrs macs make a wide range of pies, in fact just yesterday I sampled a couple just so that I was in a position to comment on them. There are Mince, Mince and Cheese, Steak, Steak and cheese, Steak and kidney, pepper steak, Curry, Chilli Beef, chicken and Veg, steak and Mushroom - the list just goes on.

Anyway - yesterday I tried a Pizza Pie - it sort of tasted like Pizza , but more like a Lasagne Pie - very tomatoish , was very tasty but contained only 7% meat.

The Steak and Cheese Pies are more like it - 25% meat , but the meat is only small chunks - I guess Ive been spoilt by Trishas where the lumps of steaks are more like .. well .. steaks. Anyway not a bad pie.

The only downside of Mrs Macs is that the pies are made in australia with Australian Beef - Ive been to Brisbane a lot and the cows they have there arent a great advert for Australian Beef. Anyway regardless of where the beef comes from - the pies are from Western Australia.

Trisha's Pies

To date the best pies Gadget and the F3 boys have had come from Trisha's pies. Our main location for this is in Kilbirnie where we purchase our most excellant pies and then cycle off to the beach at Lyall Bay where we consume these great pies and discuss the merits of each.

Personally I have tried Steak and cheese, steak and Mushroom, Steak and Kidney, pepper steak and at a weak moment when one of the boys was having posh thoughts (or thinking of Posh Spice - dont know) we tried the Chicken, Apricot and Brie Pie. I would thoroughly recommend any of the ones above that contained steak and particularly the pepper steak Pie.

Trisha's also make 2 sizes of pies although its only socially acceptable to eat the Extra large one , I think the standard size must just be for samples at Pie conferences. (wonder where they are held).
Trisha's also has a shop on Cambridge Terrace in Wellington, conveniently located near the Tasting room and Domino's Pizza (within a couple of hundred metres you can get everything required to sustain life). It has also been noted that you can buy Trisha's Pies at the NYC Coffee shop on Featherston St although these are the standard size ones - presumable because the XL ones dont fit into their warmer.
Im getting Hungry Just sitting here Blogging this. Mmmmm - Pies....

A most excellant XL Trisha's Pie at Lyall Bay.
