We cant have it said that I have only tried Trisha's Pies, so in an effort to bring a balanced review of pies I have forced myself (didnt actually take much) to eat other brands of pies as well.
I have found that Mrs Macs pies are a quite acceptable pie to have while on the Run as they are conveniently located for sale in almost every Dairy and petrol station throughout New Zealand. Except of course when travelling to Kilbirnie, The basin reserve or along Featherston street at which times Trisha's is probably the only choice.
Driving to Palmerston North on a thursday night however is a different story - every Dairy and Petrol station had mrs macs pie signs out the front and every one off them had nada in the pie warmer. I was forced to eventually eat a filled roll which contained green stuff.
Mrs macs make a wide range of pies, in fact just yesterday I sampled a couple just so that I was in a position to comment on them. There are Mince, Mince and Cheese, Steak, Steak and cheese, Steak and kidney, pepper steak, Curry, Chilli Beef, chicken and Veg, steak and Mushroom - the list just goes on.
Anyway - yesterday I tried a Pizza Pie - it sort of tasted like Pizza , but more like a Lasagne Pie - very tomatoish , was very tasty but contained only 7% meat.
The Steak and Cheese Pies are more like it - 25% meat , but the meat is only small chunks - I guess Ive been spoilt by Trishas where the lumps of steaks are more like .. well .. steaks. Anyway not a bad pie.
The only downside of Mrs Macs is that the pies are made in australia with Australian Beef - Ive been to Brisbane a lot and the cows they have there arent a great advert for Australian Beef. Anyway regardless of where the beef comes from - the pies are from Western Australia.
